Our drawing of the route, over road and path data from OpenStreetMap. It shows where the walk goes and what it goes through. It is not a survey and not a navigation aid — carry OS Explorer on the hill.
An easy 5.6-mile circular of about two and three quarter hours south over the fields to Scalby, west along the bank of the Sea Cut and back north on lanes and field paths, only 130 metres of climbing but sticky going between the villages after rain. Start on Rocks Lane in Burniston, where there is free roadside parking, and the number 115 bus runs through the village every hour. The Sea Cut gives a mile and a half of clean, slow water to swim in and quiet bank to run on, but the field sections carry cattle and sheep and there are stiles at nearly every boundary.
A 3.6-mile circular of about an hour and three quarters down the lane to the little slipway at Crook Ness, south along the Cleveland Way and back inland over farmland, with 105 metres of climbing and one steep set of steps at the ness. Start at the end of Coastguard Road on the eastern edge of Burniston, where there is a small free parking area, a ten-minute walk from the 115 bus stop in the village. The rocky shore at Crook Ness is open to dogs all year and there is fresh water where the beck crosses the beach, but the clifftop between here and Scalby Ness is unfenced and slipping, and sheep graze the return fields.
An easy 4.7-mile circular of about two hours, north on the Cinder Track from Burniston to Cloughton old station and its millennium milepost, out to Cloughton Rocks and the Wyke, then south along the clifftop to Crook Ness and back by field path. Park in Burniston village or at the Cinder Track access on Limestone Road; the 12 and 13 buses from Scarborough stop on the main road through the village. Level, well-surfaced and gentle enough for an elderly dog on the railway half, though the clifftop stretch is unfenced above a sheer drop and the fields inland are grazed by sheep.
