Brotherton village and the old Ferry Bridge

A short there-and-back down the old Great North Road from St Edward the Confessor's church to the River Aire, where John Carr's bridge of 1804 still carries the lane across into Ferrybridge and marks the county boundary. It is pavement nearly all the way, which makes it a usable evening walk in the dark and in bad weather when the field paths south of here are unwalkable. North Yorkshire Council's dog control order does not reach this parish beyond the fouling requirement, so there are no lead orders, no exclusions and no seasonal ban anywhere on the route; the £100 fixed penalty for not picking up is the only rule that applies. The riverbank below the bridge is steep and the Aire runs fast and deep here, so it is not a place to let a dog into the water.
