Rudston Pub Walk and the Gypsey Race

The council route through one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in England, a mile on the flat that starts at the Bosville Arms on the B1253, goes south down Long Street and turns into Water Lane, then follows the path beside the Gypsey Race to Middle Street. It runs alongside the stream past School Lane and Marton Lane as far as East Gate, turns up Church Lane with All Saints straight ahead, and returns by School Lane and Middle Street to the pub. All Saints holds Winifred Holtby grave and, in the churchyard, the Rudston Monolith, at nearly twenty-six feet the tallest standing stone in Britain. The council grades it easy but warns of one or more busy road crossings and a section of road walking, and the Gypsey Race is a chalk stream that dries out for months at a time. Parking is informal roadside in the village, so park considerately.
