The hill that stands over the whole of the Millom peninsula, climbed by the old pony track from St Mary's Church at Whicham, half a mile inland of Silecroft station. It is a long steady pull on grass with no scrambling and no crags on this side, and from the trig point you look down the Duddon, along the Cumbrian coast and out to the Isle of Man on a clear day. The whole summit dome is registered open access land grazed by sheep all year, so this is a lead walk in practice for most of the ascent. There is no water on the route above the intake wall.

THE SMALL PRINTBlack Combe is registered open access land. The published rule is that dogs must be kept on a short lead of no more than 2 metres near livestock at all times, and on open access land also between 1 March and 31 July each year to protect ground-nesting birds. Sheep graze the fell all year, so a lead is required in practice throughout.
