Balne is drained peat moor turned to arable, and Balne Moor Road runs straight across the middle of it for well over a mile between Whitley and Pollington. This is a big-sky walk with almost nothing in the way: dead flat, wide verges, drainage dykes on both sides and hares in the stubble, and you can see a vehicle coming from half a mile off. It crosses working farmland so the Countryside Code rule holds, dog on a lead or in sight and on a lead around livestock, and the dykes are deep enough that a swimmer will need watching. There is no seasonal restriction and nowhere here that dogs are excluded; the only order that reaches this parish is the North Yorkshire fouling requirement, which carries a hundred-pound fixed penalty.

THE SMALL PRINTWorking farmland either side of an unpavemented lane. Countryside Code applies: dog on a lead or in sight, not straying from the path, on a lead around livestock. Deep drainage dykes run alongside for most of the route.
