Starts at
Askwith Moor Road gritted parking area, on the moor road about a mile and a half north of Askwith village LS21 2JQ
Parking
Free gritted lay-by parking for roughly fifteen cars on the moor edge; it is a known night-sky spot as well as a walkers park, so it fills on clear evenings and on Sunday mornings in the heather seaso
Directions to the start →

Askwith sits under the moor and the moor is the reason to come. The gritted parking area on Askwith Moor Road is the standard start: from it you walk north along the lane, then turn east through the heather past the lip of an old quarry onto Snowden Moor, where a cairnfield and a scatter of carved rocks sit above Snowden Crags looking south over Wharfedale to Otley Chevin. This is registered open country and Natural England records no local dog restriction over it, so within the standard access rules a dog may be on the open moor here. It is keepered grouse moor with sheep on it, and the going is heather, peat groughs and hidden boulders rather than path, so it is slow work even though the climb is small.

THE SMALL PRINTOpen access land: GOV.UK requires dogs on a lead of no more than two metres from 1 March to 31 July to protect ground-nesting birds, and at all times around livestock. Natural England records no local dog restriction over Askwith and Snowden Moor as at 30 July 2026. Ground-nesting birds mean this is closely watched ground in spring.
