Seven miles and 350 metres of climbing in three and a half hours, from the prehistoric rock art at Lordenshaws along the sandstone crags of Simonside and Dove Crag with the Cheviots laid out to the north, returning on forest tracks. Start at the Lordenshaws car park off the Rothbury to Great Tosson road, free with about 25 spaces and full by mid-morning at weekends, with no verge parking on the narrow lane. The forest tracks on the return are a good off-lead run, but the heather ridge is grazed and holds ground-nesting curlew, red grouse and merlin, so the National Park’s Take the Lead campaign asks for dogs on leads on the open moor, and the crags drop away abruptly on their north side.

Three and a half miles in an hour and three quarters on the flat, from the hamlet of Holystone to the stone-lined spring the National Trust keeps as the Lady’s Well and round the oak and juniper of Holystone North Wood. Start at the small free car park in Holystone, two miles east of Harbottle, which holds a dozen cars and is signposted from the village lane. Woodland tracks make good off-lead walking with the Holystone Burn for water, but the Well itself is a walled enclosure that dogs should stay out of, and the wood is a nature reserve where the juniper and the ground flora do better for a dog kept to the path.

Start at the free West Wood car park at the west end of Harbottle, about 15 spaces, with the walk finishing along the Coquet edge of the village. Forest track for the first mile is safe off the lead and the Coquet at the end gives a swim, but the crags are a grazed nature reserve with ground-nesting birds where leads are asked for from March to July, the lake bog is dangerously deep, and the castle mound has sudden drops.

Two and three quarter miles with 140 metres of climbing, an easy hour and a quarter up through the pines to the enormous free-standing sandstone block of the Drake Stone and on to the dark water of Harbottle Lake. Start from the small free car park in West Wood at the west end of Harbottle village, which holds about 15 cars and is the only parking; the village street is narrow and lined with houses. The forest tracks are fine off the lead, but the bog around the lake conceals very deep water and neither dog nor walker should stray off the path, the crags above the Drake Stone are unfenced, and the reserve beyond is grazed with ground-nesting birds from March to July.

Eight miles and 400 metres of climbing in four and a half hours, up the medieval drove road of Clennell Street to Copper Snout, down into the Alwin valley and back over Barrow Scar above the Coquet gorge. Start at the National Park car park at Alwinton, free with about 30 spaces, which is the last parking before the military ranges and the last building of any kind is the Rose and Thistle in the village. This is as remote as English walking gets: much of the ground is Ministry of Defence land where access is only permitted when no red flags or lamps are flying, there is no phone signal in the valleys, and the fell is grazed by hardy sheep with ground-nesting curlew from March to July, though the Alwin gives good water.

A medieval drove road climbing out of Alwinton over the hills to the Border ridge, still a green track for most of its length. Alwinton is the last village in upper Coquetdale: beyond it there is no fuel, no shop and no signal, and the Otterburn military ranges lie to the east with live firing on published days. Leads on for sheep and nesting birds, and turn back early rather than late.

Eight miles with only 200 metres of climbing but four hours of it, from the great green at Elsdon past the Norman motte and out over the moor to the replica gallows at Steng Cross where William Winter was hung in chains in 1792. Park on the roadside round Elsdon’s green, which is free and generous, though the village has one pub and no shop; there is also a lay-by at the gibbet itself if you would rather see it without the walk. Miles of empty moor track where a dog can run with burns to drink from, but the ground is grazed by sheep the whole way, holds ground-nesting curlew and lapwing from March to July, and the last stretch follows an unfenced moor road with fast traffic.

The valley road ends at Hartside, past river shingle, hillforts and cleared settlements, with parking on the haughs at Ingram and Bulby's Wood. There is no shop past Powburn and no mobile signal in the upper valley.
