Dog-friendly East Cowton and around

The last of the four old inns that once served this village on the flat lands north of Northallerton, and now the only pub for some miles around. It is listed as dog friendly, so dogs come into the bar with their walkers. Opening hours are limited, so ring ahead midweek.

Seventeenth-century village inn sitting directly on Wainwright's Coast to Coast route, famously marking 66 miles left to Robin Hood's Bay. Dogs are welcome inside the pub alongside the walkers, real ales and hearty food that sustain the trail trade; there is also simple B&B and camping. Food service is geared to the walking season, so ring ahead in winter.

A four-hundred-year-old village pub in the middle of Middleton Tyas, an old copper-mining village a mile east of Scotch Corner. The pub's own facilities list states dogs are allowed, alongside a beer garden, a car park and a real fire, so there is somewhere to sit outside in summer and something to dry off in front of in winter. Food is served every day, lunchtimes and evenings Monday to Friday and straight through on Saturday and Sunday, with the bar open until eleven. It is the obvious stop at the end of the Five Hills Lane and Cow Lane circuit.

Handsome country inn on Lumley Lane at Kirkby Fleetham with fourteen en-suite bedrooms, regional real ales and modern British cooking. The inn advertises itself as guaranteed dog friendly, with dogs welcomed in the bar and in selected bedrooms on request. Quiet lanes and field paths radiate straight from the door.

A Georgian estate on Kneeton Lane a mile north of Middleton Tyas village, with bedrooms spread across the Coach House, Walled Garden, Dairy and Orchard buildings. The estate's own terms are precise about dogs: five Coach House comfy rooms take them at thirty pounds per room per night and no other room type does, dogs stay on leads everywhere on the grounds, and they are kept out of the lounges, the Walled Gardens and the Orchard. Indoors at the Coach House restaurant is also out, with the Snug the one exception, so a dog can sit with you for a drink but not in the main dining room. Parking on the estate is free and there are farm animals on site that dogs must be kept away from.

The published terms bar dogs from the indoor restaurant but make one exception, the Snug, so a dog can sit with you there while you eat or drink and nowhere else inside. Dogs must be on a lead the whole time they are on the estate, and they cannot be taken into the lounges, the Walled Gardens or the Orchard, which rules out a wander round the gardens afterwards. Booking is required for all restaurant guests and you are met at the Gatehouse on the main drive when you arrive.

It is listed as a dog friendly pub, and dogs are a routine sight in the bar alongside the cask ale drinkers. Sunday lunch runs from noon, with homemade Yorkshire puddings.
