A four-mile two-hour circuit out of the Georgian town over the species-rich chalk grassland of the Milldown, down to the Stour and back along the river past Bryanston woods, with 120 metres of climb on mown grass, stony track and riverside path. Easy underfoot, though the meadow section floods in winter. Start from the Marsh and Ham car park by the bridge in Blandford, pay and display, several hundred spaces and rarely full; the Milldown is a fifteen-minute walk uphill from it. The Milldown is a Dorset Council nature reserve where the grassland is grazed and mown for orchids, so leads across the sward when stock are in, but the river path gives easy shallow access for a swim below the bridge.

Stour Mill Cottage

A recently resurfaced narrow country lane leads to this idyllic cottage giving guests a taste of the quiet countryside surroundings that this property enjoys. As would be expected for a rural property there are plenty of enjoyable walks to be had close by and guests might enjoy a pleasurable stroll along the River Stour or perhaps the circular walk around the Iron Age ramparts of the hillfort at nearby Hod Hill. Three miles south of the property the Georgian town of Blandford Forum is a pleasant market town which not only still has a weekly market but also maintains a range of traditional shops including a great butcher and a bakery and even boasts its own brewery which has its own shop and is open for tours. This single-storey cottage makes a lovely place for a quiet stay in a pretty rural location. On arrival guests may like to make themselves comfortable in the lounge/diner where there is a warming wood burner a TV/DVD iPod dock patio doors and a selection of books for guests to enjoy. The galley-style kitchen is located just off the lounge/diner and offers an oven hob microwave fridge/freezer dishwasher washing machine and coffee machine. The property has two bedrooms the first of which is a king-size room with views overlooking the garden. The second bedroom meanwhile is a pleasant twin room with 2 6 beds which can be made up as a double room on request at the time of booking. The shower room has a shower and WC. Outside there is a delightful covered seating area to the rear of the property which is accessed through the patio doors in the lounge. There is garden furniture here as well as a BBQ making it a great space for alfresco drinks or meals. Beyond this area is a spacious enclosed lawn which is great for relaxing and playing. There are also a good range of leisure facilities available to guests which include a games room with table football an outdoor table tennis table boules and croquet. The owner of the property has a private stretch of the River Stour which guests can use to launch canoes if they have and can also be used for fishing by arrangement with the owner. A fantastic and unusual addition to the property is the shepherds hut which is located in a nearby paddock and offers a fun overnight glamping experience with its double bed wood burner separate kitchen hut firepit and compost WC. This can all be experienced at an additional cost of 50 per night or 250 per week and needs to be booked directly with the owner prior to your arrival. Need to know: 2 bedrooms: 1 king size and 1 twin which can be made up as a double on request. Shower room with shower and WC. TV/DVDand iPod dock Wi Fi included. Wood burner with logs provided Kitchen: oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, coffee machine, dishwasher, and washing machine. A 3.4-mile two-hour circuit from the village up onto the flat-topped hillfort the Roman army built a camp inside, then down to the Stour and back along the river. Around 150 metres of climb on a chalky track, easy going, though the field paths by the river are heavy after rain. Start from the free village car park behind the White Horse in Stourpaine, only a dozen spaces or so, with careful on-street parking as the alternative. Cattle graze the fort plateau most of the year so leads up there, and the Stour at the bottom gives a proper deep swim for a dog that wants one, with a shallow gravel entry below the bridge rather than the steep banks upstream.

A 3.2-mile hour-and-three-quarter climb of the finest iron age hillfort silhouette in Dorset, 200 metres of ascent up a rugged path from the village onto a national nature reserve of terraced ramparts and chalk grassland. Steep, uneven and slippery in the wet, with the spur walk north along the ridge worth the extra half mile. Park in the lay-by south-east of Child Okeford village, which takes only a few cars, so the village hall or on-street in the village is the fallback, with a walk of five minutes to the gate. The reserve is grazed by cattle and sheep to keep the flowers, so a lead is needed throughout, and the rampart ditches are deep and steep-sided with no water anywhere on the hill.

A 6.2-mile chalk downland half-day of three and a half hours with 300 metres of climb, north to the trig point on Melbury Beacon and then south along the scarp over Fontmell Down, one of the richest flower and butterfly slopes in southern England. Steep sheep-grazed turf throughout, no shelter, and a wind that never quite stops on the ridge. Start at the small free car park on Spread Eagle Hill on the Shaftesbury to Blandford road, twenty spaces at most, right on the National Trust boundary. Sheep and cattle graze both downs, so leads through the grazing, the scarp edge is steep enough to be a hazard for a dog running blind, and there is no water on the route at all.

Five and a half miles of forest road through pine plantation and open heath restoration, two and a half hours, almost flat at 80 metres of climb and firm enough for a pushchair or a dog that hates mud. Sika deer genuinely do cross it at dawn and dusk. Start from the Sika Trail car park off the Bere Road north of Wareham, where Forestry England charges nothing at all, and there are three more free car parks at Woolsbarrow, Stroud Bridge and Sugar Hill if it is busy. Well-behaved dogs are welcome off lead on the forest roads under close control, but the heath sections hold nightjar and woodlark nests on the ground from spring into summer and adders are common, so a lead where the signs ask for one.
