Deep Dale and Enclosure Rites from Wintringham

Wintringham sits at 59 metres in a re-entrant at the foot of the Wolds escarpment, and this short round climbs 100 metres out of it. From the church the Yorkshire Wolds Way goes east into the trees of Deep Dale Plantation and then up the steep pull that the National Trail describes as a 60-metre rise in 200 metres. At the top, on the brow at West Farm, is Jony Easterby's Enclosure Rites: a chalk path between split oak posts leading to a platform above a dew pond, with the whole Vale of Pickering and the North York Moors laid out behind it. The return is on a farm track dropping south-west across the open wold and then a gravel track back to the foot of the climb, so you only retrace the last half-kilometre. There is no beck and no standing water on the top, so carry water for the dog.
