Silloth to Grune Point

Seven and a quarter miles and close to three hours on ground that is almost completely flat, out along the promenade and the Skinburness shore to the shingle spit of Grune Point, where the Solway opens out towards Criffel and the Scottish shore. It starts on Silloth's green, where the wide streets carry free parking all the way along the front - the easiest arrival of any walk in this county. The far half is quiet saltmarsh and shingle with big skies and few people, and the sea is shallow and safe for a swim at the right state of tide, but Grune Point is a nature reserve with ground-nesting and overwintering birds and grazing stock on the marsh, so leads from the Skinburness corner out. The saltmarsh channels fill fast on a rising tide.
