Lunds Church and The High Way to Hell Gill Bridge

Lunds is a scatter of farms at the very head of Wensleydale, and this is the walk that belongs to it. Field paths run north from the closed chapel in its walled ring of trees, above the infant Ure, and climb onto The High Way, the old drove and coach road that Lady Anne Clifford used between her castles, which is then followed north as a firm unpaved track to Hell Gill Bridge on the county boundary. Hell Gill itself is a limestone slot around thirty feet deep and only a few feet wide, unfenced where the beck cuts under the bridge, and it is the one place on this walk where a dog needs to be on a short lead and held. Hell Gill Force drops into the Eden a few hundred yards beyond, over the boundary in Cumbria, down a steep and greasy path that is not worth attempting with a dog.
