Dog-friendly walks in Kepwick

Four and a quarter miles from Kepwick up the escarpment on a sunken track and back down the Gallow Hill descent, about two hours with 217 metres of climbing - the only real ascent anywhere in this patch. Park considerately in Kepwick, which has no facilities at all, so fill water bottles before you set off. The climb is on good grass and stone, but the top is open access moorland where dogs must be on a short lead in the ground-nesting bird season, and sheep graze the moor edge all year.

Nearly nine miles and 290 metres of climb from Kepwick up to the Black Hambleton summit cairn by way of Whitestone Scar, four hours or so on gravel moor track and grassy path with big views back over the Vale of Mowbray. Park considerately in the village; there is nothing on the route at all, so carry water because the moor tops run dry by midsummer. Open access moorland means a short lead through the ground-nesting bird season, sheep are loose on the tops, and the gravel track is hard on soft pads over that distance.
