Dog-friendly walks in Grenoside

One hundred and eighty-three hectares of ancient woodland above Grenoside, bought outright by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust in 2012 and criss-crossed by footpaths, bridleways and a section of the Trans Pennine Trail. Oak and birch stand over heathland remnants, bluebells and cow-wheat in spring, bilberries and blackberries in summer and a heavy fungi season in autumn. The Trust is unambiguous that dogs must be on leads at all times here, which matters more than usual because three downhill mountain bike trails run through the wood and riders come fast and quiet. Parking is the free Forestry England car park on Woodhead Road, with the main Greno entrance directly across the road.

One of Sheffield's twenty district parks, on the edge of Grenoside village at the top of the hill, with pitches, a bowling green, a play area and a path round the outside. The reason to know about it is what it sits next to: Greno Woods and Wheata Woods start a few hundred yards north-west, and the Trans Pennine Trail comes down off Wharncliffe into the village. Use the rec as the short walk or as the place to park before a long one. It is open, exposed and windy at this height.

Forestry England conifer and broadleaf woodland climbing from Woodhead Road north of Grenoside towards Wharncliffe Crags and the Don valley, with waymarked walking trails, three graded mountain bike routes and a Go Ape in the middle of it. Parking is free and there are no charges anywhere on the site. Forestry England's Forest Dog Code applies rather than any order: dog close and in sight, on a lead if recall is unreliable, kept from approaching or chasing people and animals, and signs followed where forest operations or wildlife work are under way. Timber harvesting closes sections at short notice, so read the boards at the car park before setting off.

Fifty-eight hectares of semi-natural ancient woodland on the north-west edge of Sheffield, owned and managed by Sheffield City Council, on the Inventory of Ancient Woodland and designated a Local Nature Reserve. It runs into Greno Woods and Prior Royd on the same ridge, so a two-mile round here can be extended into a much longer day on forest tracks. There is archaeology under the trees as well as biodiversity, including old quarrying and boundary banks. Paths are unsurfaced and the ground holds water in winter.
