The full hill day: 11.1 miles and 400 metres of climbing, over five hours, up the lonely side valley of Tripsdale and out on to Urra Moor for Round Hill, at 454 metres the highest point in the National Park. Start from the village hall car park at Chop Gate in Bilsdale, on the B1257 between Helmsley and Stokesley, where parking is free with a donation box. Tripsdale Beck gives the only reliable water so fill up early, the moor is grouse ground with free-roaming sheep, and leads are required on the open moor from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds.

A hard 8.3-mile horseshoe with 470 metres of ascent and about four and a quarter hours, climbing Cold Moor to the gritstone tors of the Wainstones and traversing the head of Bilsdale to Urra Moor and the highest ground in the national park; there is real scrambling among the Wainstones and the descent is steep and stony. It starts at the National Park car park at Chop Gate village hall, which is free and rarely full, and there is no bus and no shop, so bring everything you need. Bilsdale Beck at the bottom is the only reliable water, so carry some for the tops in summer, the ridge is superb open ground for a strong dog, but the Wainstones have real drops among the rocks, sheep graze the whole ridge, and leads are required on the moor from 1 March to 31 July.
