Dog-friendly walks in Barton le Willows

The proper walk out of Barton-le-Willows heads north-east on the lane past the last farm, then leaves the tarmac at Barton Fields for a green farm track carrying a public footpath most of the way to Crambe. It drops steadily off the Howardian foothills towards the Derwent, with the ground opening out and Crambe's eleventh-century church tower ahead. Crambe itself is a dozen houses, a church and no shop, so bring your own water. Kirkham Priory is a further mile north up the lane from Crambe: English Heritage lists it among its dog-friendly places, entry is free and it is open any reasonable daylight hours, with free parking outside the gate.

Two Howardian foothill hamlets a mile and a bit apart, joined by a single-track lane with grass verges and almost no traffic. The route leaves Barton-le-Willows westward past the pond end of the village, drops onto Butts Lane and then climbs gently south-west on the unfenced lane over Barton Hill to the green at Harton. It is all metalled public highway, so there are no stiles, no gates and no field boundaries to argue with, but it is also unpavemented and used by tractors and milk lorries, so this is a lead walk rather than a running-free walk. The verges are wide enough to step onto for the whole distance and there is a long view north to the Howardian ridge from the high point.
