A 16th-century country inn perched on the hillside above Rosedale Abbey with panoramic views across the dale. The bar and outdoor terrace are dog friendly, staff keep a jar of dog treats behind the bar, and there are dog-friendly bedrooms for walkers doing the Rosedale round. Moorland and railway-trackbed walks start straight from the door.

A stone inn on Alder Carr Lane at the foot of Rosedale Chimney, well placed for the ironstone railway track around the dale head. Dogs are welcome in the bar areas, so muddy paws off the moor are no obstacle to a pint by the fire.
