A 16th-century freehouse standing alone at 1,325 feet on Blakey Ridge, the highest point of the North York Moors, with open fires in ancient stone fireplaces and low beamed ceilings. Well-behaved dogs are allowed in the bar area but not the dining rooms, and some of the 13 bedrooms take dogs on request. A legendary refuelling stop for Coast to Coast and Lyke Wake walkers between Rosedale and Farndale.
