The Linhay Lukesland

There are beautiful walks directly from the property but for those more serious ramblers Dartmoor is just 7 miles away. The nearby town of Kingsbridge (7 miles) located on an attractive estuary is just a short drive away with much to offer including a selection of cafes pubs and shops. Totnes (10 miles) has a castle and an abundance of independent shopping a local market and stunning countryside. Further afield visit Salcombe and Dartmouth (both 13 miles) where you can sample the freshly caught seafood and the sailing facilities available. Stepping into the property will bring you to the welcoming open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner/bedroom area. A king-size bed welcomes guests to rest tired limbs after a full day s worth of exploring. A one-mile National Trust loop out to a low headland in the middle of the Salcombe estuary, half an hour of gentle walking with a few steps and about 45 metres of climbing on grass and farm track. The Trust car park at the top of Sandhills Road is free and holds perhaps a dozen cars, so it is a good bet when Salcombe itself is gridlocked; the walk is also reachable on foot from the town in fifteen minutes. Dogs can be off the lead on the headland but the loop crosses grazed pasture with cattle in summer, and the shoreline below is reached only at a couple of muddy gaps, so this is a view walk rather than a swimming one.

Three point nine miles of easy coast above the eastern shore of the Salcombe estuary, taking around two and a quarter hours with 190 metres of climbing on rocky cliff path, a surfaced lane and one green lane. Start at the small East Portlemouth car park, or leave the car in Salcombe and cross on the passenger ferry from Whitestrand, which takes dogs for a small fare and saves the long drive round by Frogmore. This is the best dog walk on the estuary because Mill Bay, Sunny Cove and Rickham Sand all stay open to dogs year round, there is sheltered water to swim in on the way out, and the only care needed is the unfenced cliff top by Gara Rock and stock in the fields on the green lane home.

A gentle 3.2 miles of about an hour and three quarters over the dunes and low cliffs to Thurlestone Sand and the Thurlestone rock, returning through the village and by field paths, with only 130 metres of climbing and firm going throughout. Start at the paid Bantham Beach car park, which is run by the Bantham Estate and closes its gates in the evening, and note that the lane in from Buckland is narrow and busy with surfers all summer. The dog position is unusual here and worth getting right: the South Hams council order names only Bigbury, Mouthwell Sands at Hope Cove and Salcombe South Sands, so Bantham's own summer dog rules are set by the estate that owns the beach, while Thurlestone Sand a mile along the walk is dog-friendly with a stream to drink from.

The outer of Salcombe's two town beaches, with the sea tractor and ferry landing at one end. South Hams District Council operates a full twenty-four-hour dog ban here for the whole season, with one narrow exception for dogs crossing the sand on a lead to reach the ferry. This is the strictest beach order in the South Hams.

A 3.6-mile circuit from South Sands up past the palms of Overbeck's to the rock towers of Sharp Tor and Bolt Head, about two and a quarter hours with 240 metres of climbing on uneven, rocky cliff path and a stepped drop into Starehole Bay. Start from the small paid car park at Tides Reach or leave the car in Shadycombe in Salcombe and take the South Sands ferry, because the lane down is narrow and the beach parking fills by mid-morning. Dogs are excluded from South Sands between 1 May and 30 September except to cross on a lead for the ferry, but the headland above is open and off-lead, with sheep in the fields behind Tor Woods and a long unfenced drop above Starehole.

Four point eight miles and two and a half hours from the thatched lanes of Outer Hope round the prehistoric fort on Bolt Tail and along the open heath of Bolberry Down, back by quiet road and green lane, with 240 metres of climbing on uneven field and cliff path. Park in the pay-and-display car park at Outer Hope, which is the only sensible parking in the village and fills early, or use the twice-daily 162 bus from Kingsbridge. Dogs run free on the Bolberry heath and the National Trust keeps the top paths wide and firm, but Mouthwell Sands, the main beach at Hope Cove, excludes dogs between 10am and 7pm from 1 May to 30 September, and there are cliff drops on Bolt Tail with no fence and sheep on the return lanes.
