Winster is a rural village on the eastern boundaries of the Peak District National Park surrounded by delights of the Derbyshire Dales countryside. The hilly nature of the village means there are some outstanding views to be had and plenty of stunning footpaths to explore locally. Winster is within easy reach of all the main walking areas in the southern peaks. There are many things to do around and about including Chatsworth House and Gardens and Haddon Hall which are within a short drive. The nearby town of Matlock offers an array of eateries and independent shops to enjoy. The river Derwent flows through Matlock to Matlock Bath which is home to Gulliver s Kingdom and The Heights of Abraham which provide a fun-filled family day out. The popular town of Bakewell is close too. Step into the cottage hallway hang up your coat and wander through to the well fitted and equipped kitchen which offers an inviting space to prepare any meals with an electric oven and hob fridge/freezer dishwasher Tassimo coffee maker and microwave. Cross the hall to the lounge/diner area offering a haven to relax in. Light the wood burner and sink into the sofa in front of the TV and relax with good company or come together around the table and enjoy a home-cooked meal. Step down a few steps to a small utility space with a washing machine and a shower room with shower and WC. From the hall stairs lead up to the first floor and you will find a double bedroom which feels light and airy with a wonderful high ceiling and a twin bedroom decorated with pretty floral wallpaper. There is a further shower room here with shower and WC meaning morning routines will flow with ease. There is also access to the patio from this level. Outside is a wonderful split level landscaped patio garden approached via steps with a table and chairs ideally placed to take in the far-reaching views over the village and beyond why not light the BBQ and enjoy dining alfresco. There are steps down to the front of the cottage. Well behaved dogs are welcome and the garden is pet friendly. Parking can be found on West Bank subject to availability and there is also a small car park at the top of the road. Need to know: 2 bedrooms 1 double and 1 twin. 2 shower rooms with shower and WC. Electric oven and hob, fridge/freezer, Tassimo coffee maker, dishwasher and microwave. Utility area with washing machine. TV in lounge. Wood burner (first supply of logs included from November March). Please note there are internal steps in the property between the double bedroom and bathroom. Patio garden with seating and BBQ. On road parking (subject to availability). Pubs and shop within walking distance.

Four miles and about two and a quarter hours, over the little cone of Oker Hill with its single sycamore for a 360-degree view of the Derwent valley, then back by the river meadows. Start from the county council picnic site car park at Darley Bridge, two miles north-west of Matlock, which is free, holds about 25 cars and gives direct access to the rights of way. The climb is short but steep and the fields either side are grazed by sheep and cattle, so a two-metre lead is needed near stock and there are several stone stiles; the Derwent at Darley Bridge is shallow, gravelly and ideal for a wash-off at the end.

Four miles of preserved line between Rowsley South, Darley Dale and Matlock Riverside, worked by steam and heritage diesels. Well-behaved dogs travel free on all ordinary trains; the railway asks only that you keep them off the seats. Restrictions apply to the Santa and dining trains, so check before booking those.

Five and a half miles and about three hours linking two of the clearest rivers in England, with only one real climb out of Bradford Dale and back down to Alport. Park on Alport Lane or Church Street in Youlgreave, both free but tight; there is no car park in the village at all. The dales are part of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve where livestock graze large areas and dogs are asked to be on the lead, the shallow pools in Bradford Dale are the best dog swimming in the White Peak, and there are stone stiles that a big dog will need help over.

Seven miles and close to four hours across the limestone shelf to the gritstone tors of Robin Hood's Stride, returning by the Bradford valley. Start from roadside parking in Youlgreave; the alternative is the small free pull-in on the lane below Robin Hood's Stride, which holds about eight cars. Field paths cross sheep and cattle pasture almost continuously so a two-metre lead is needed near stock, the packhorse route has steep stone steps at Cratcliffe, and dogs can drink from the Bradford at the end but not on the high ground.

The old Co-op building in the middle of Youlgreave, above Bradford Dale and a mile from Lathkill. Dogs are only allowed if you take the whole hostel on YHA's Exclusive Hire, and even then not in the bedrooms, on the furniture or in the kitchen, and on a lead in the grounds. For a group with dogs that is a genuinely useful option; for a couple booking a room it is a no.

Dogs are welcome on the cable cars and across the estate, but not in the show caverns or the restaurant, which the estate states outright. Seven and a half miles there and back on the old Cromford and High Peak Railway, three and a half hours, level and surfaced apart from the long shallow gradient of the incline. Start at Middleton Top engine house above Wirksworth, a county council car park charging £3.50 for three hours and £7 all day, with a visitor centre, cycle hire and toilets. The trail is traffic-free and wide, so close control is enough rather than a lead, but it is exposed with no shade and no water for miles, and the embankments run through sheep pasture where a lead is needed if stock have strayed onto the verges.

Six miles and about three and a quarter hours down the Derwent gorge to Cromford, along the canal to High Peak Junction and back on the woodland paths above Matlock Bath. Start at Matlock station, where the pay-and-display is next to the platform and the Derwent Valley line puts Derby and Nottingham within reach without a car. The canal towpath is level and dog-easy with close control enough, but the river paths are grazed in places and the gorge sections above Matlock Bath are steep with drops; there are refreshments and water at the High Peak Junction visitor centre.

The High Peak Trail at Middleton Top

Wirksworth

Seventeen and a half miles of the Cromford and High Peak Railway, running from High Peak Junction at Cromford up to Dowlow near Buxton and meeting the Tissington Trail at Parsley Hay. It is traffic-free and surfaced throughout, so it walks well in winter and suits wheels and old dogs, but note the inclines: cyclists and riders are directed round the western route at Middleton Top. The 1829 winding engine at the top of the incline opens on selected weekends, and there is a shop, cycle hire and toilets at the car park.
