Dog-friendly Hope

Sixteenth-century dining pub on the Edale road out of Hope, named for the packhorse trade that paid its rent in cheese. Dogs are allowed in the pub and the dining areas, which is rarer than it should be, but the inn states clearly that they cannot stay in the overnight rooms. Book a table at weekends; it fills with walkers off Win Hill.

Village pub on Hope's market place whose own sign reads dogs and muddy boots welcome, which sets the tone. Five en-suite rooms upstairs, though the bedroom dog policy is not published, so ask when you book. Well placed for Lose Hill, Win Hill and the Castleton walk.

Six and a half miles and three and a half hours up the long eastern shoulder of Lose Hill, along the ridge to Back Tor and back by Hollins Cross and Townhead. Park on Marsh Lane in Hope or, better on a busy day, come in on the train and start from the station a few hundred metres away. Sheep graze every field on the way up and the ridge is National Trust land where short leads are asked for all year, the pull to Back Tor has rock steps and a chain-assisted section a nervous dog will hate, and the last water is the trough at Townhead.

Five and a half miles and about three and a quarter hours, a 420-metre climb to a rocky summit with the best all-round view in the Hope Valley for the effort involved. Start from the pay-and-display car park on Marsh Lane in Hope, small but usually with space, and the station is 500 metres away for anyone coming by train. The lower fields are grazed and the ridge is open access, so a two-metre fixed lead is required near stock and from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds; there is no water above the last field gate and the summit tor is a short scramble that some dogs will refuse.

Modern outdoors hotel on the A6187 between Hope and Bamford, built around wet kit, bikes and dogs rather than in spite of them. Dog-friendly rooms are a core part of the offer, with drying space and floors that survive a Kinder day. Bike hire on site and the Ladybower trails ten minutes up the road.

Edwardian hotel up a lane on the flank of Lose Hill, with a spa and a view straight down the valley. Dogs stay in designated dog-friendly rooms with ground-floor external access and wooden floors, at a £20 surcharge per dog, and are welcome in the grounds but not in the hotel's public areas. Request a dog room at the time of booking as there are only a couple.
