A half-mile waymarked circuit of a small valley mire on the A684 Sedbergh road about five and a half miles east of Kendal, with boardwalk and bridges over the wettest ground. Cumbria Wildlife Trust publishes the reserve as dogs on a lead, and the reason is under your feet: the reserve is uneven and wet with ditches and areas of deep water either side of the path. One of the bridges on the circuit is currently closed, so check the Trust's page before setting off. It makes a good leg-stretch off the Sedbergh road rather than a destination in itself.

Or why not visit Sedbergh s weekly market on Wednesday mornings to buy your fresh local produce. Exploring the Dales landmarks include Cautley Spout (6.5 miles) Pendragon Castle (14.5 miles) and White Scar Cave (18 miles). Both Kendal (9.5 miles) and the pretty market town of Kirkby Lonsdale (11 miles) have some great places to eat and drink. Like most of the ground-floor rooms the snug has flagstone floors and original wooden ceiling beams adding to the charm of the property. Exploring further the main lounge also has a TV and plenty of seating as well as a warming wood burner perfect for chatting late into the night. The bright and airy kitchen has a fantastic range of useful equipment including an electric range-style oven with gas hob fridge/freezer an additional separate freezer a microwave and a tap providing instant boiling water. The central island makes a charming spot for breakfast. The kitchen opens into the light-filled sun room which also serves as the dining room. This elegant space has windows on three sides offering fantastic rural views and provides an ideal spot for sharing a special family meal. The washing machine can be found in the utility room. Originally the pantry there s now a stylish ground-floor shower room with shower WC and a unique stone washbasin. Heading upstairs there are four pretty bedrooms off the traditional panelled landing. You can choose from a super-king-size room two twin rooms and a king-size room all decorated in soothing and relaxing tones. The first floor also has the family bathroom with underfloor heating and featuring a panelled bath separate shower and WC. Outside the extensive grounds have a lovely patio with a BBQ and outdoor furniture perfect for al fresco dining on a sunny afternoon. The patio is also home to a delightful pond which provides a peaceful haven for birds and wildlife. The garden also benefits from a handy outdoor WC. Beyond the gardens you will have access to the neighbouring 5-acre paddock which is dog friendly with no live stock around. Mowed pathways through and around the paddock which is perfect for a grounding bare foot walk where you can follow a path towards the River Lune and the Dales Way. Seating is available at the top of a hillock opposite the farm with beautiful 360 degree views - perfect for enjoying quiet moments. The river at the bottom of the paddock also offers the opportunity for wild swimming too. Overall the property is great for wellbeing offering stunning views of the Howgill Fells and a peaceful yet accessible location. There s also ample off-road parking space. Lunds is a scatter of farms at the very head of Wensleydale, and this is the walk that belongs to it. Field paths run north from the closed chapel in its walled ring of trees, above the infant Ure, and climb onto The High Way, the old drove and coach road that Lady Anne Clifford used between her castles, which is then followed north as a firm unpaved track to Hell Gill Bridge on the county boundary. Hell Gill itself is a limestone slot around thirty feet deep and only a few feet wide, unfenced where the beck cuts under the bridge, and it is the one place on this walk where a dog needs to be on a short lead and held. Hell Gill Force drops into the Eden a few hundred yards beyond, over the boundary in Cumbria, down a steep and greasy path that is not worth attempting with a dog.

Ten miles and four and a half hours for only 230 metres of climb - south out of Kendal along the Kent, over the long whaleback of The Helm above Oxenholme, and back by field paths and the Natland lane. It starts in central Kendal and can be shortened by catching the train back from Oxenholme, which is a mile from the summit and takes dogs free of charge. The riverside first half is level, shaded and full of water access, and The Helm itself is short grass with a trig point and a big view of the Howgills, but the hill is grazed with sheep the year round, several of the field boundaries have narrow slotted stone stiles, and a mile of the return is on a lane with no pavement.

Nine and a half miles and about four and a quarter hours for 310 metres of climb, walked out of the town onto the limestone escarpment: Cunswick Fell first, then the mile-long edge of Scout Scar past the domed shelter known as the Mushroom, with the whole Lakeland skyline in front. It starts in central Kendal, five minutes from the bus station and fifteen from the railway station, so the walk needs no car at all; the free Scout Scar car park on the Underbarrow road cuts it to four miles but holds only about 30 vehicles. The turf is springy and dry underfoot even in winter, but the escarpment edge is an unfenced 60-metre limestone cliff for its entire length, sheep and sometimes cattle graze the top, and there is no water anywhere on the plateau.

It sits at the town end of the riverside path to Abbot Hall and the castle, which makes it a natural finish to a Kendal walk.

Two and a half miles and an hour, forty metres of climb: over the Kent by the Miller Bridge, up the green mound to the castle ruin for the view along the town, and back down the riverside path through the parks. It starts on Miller Bridge in the middle of Kendal, a few minutes from either station, and the town car parks at Blackhall Road and the shopping centre are both paid but usually have space. This is the easy town walk that works for any dog - level tarmac and grass path, a river with several shallow gravel entries for a drink or a swim, and no stiles or livestock at all; the castle mound is open ground shared with dog walkers from the estates either side, and the riverside path is busy with cyclists.
