Daymer Bay

Sheltered dune-backed sand inside the Camel estuary, shallow and calm compared with the surf beaches either side. It is not among the beaches covered by Cornwall Council's dogs-on-beaches order, so it takes dogs all year with no time restriction — the reason it fills with them in August. Brea Hill above it is grazed, so leads on the dunes.

Rock to Polzeath and St Enodoc

Just under six miles round the dunes, beaches and golf links of the Camel’s eastern shore, about two and three quarter hours and easy going apart from soft sand and the pull over Brea Hill. It starts at the Rock car park by the ferry slip, which is large but pay-and-display, and the Padstow ferry means you can arrive on foot from the other side. Stiles are all passable for a large dog and Rock and Daymer Bay take dogs the year round, which is unusual on this coast; the route crosses a working golf course where a lead is expected, and the low cliff at Trebetherick Point is unfenced.

This cottage is located in a quiet rural location and yet is just one mile from Rock a town which has become popular with well-heeled visitors looking for a break from city life. The beach here is simply stunning and is a particularly lovely place to sit in the evenings and view the lights of Padstow across the estuary. Of course no visit to the area would be complete without catching the foot-ferry over to this renowned foodie town with its wealth of eateries not least Rick Stein s restaurant fish and chip café and deli. This property provides a wonderful base for a Cornish holiday and guests will be enchanted by its rural surroundings and attractive original features including the beamed ceilings and the slate floors which are found in the lounge and kitchen/diner. The lounge makes for a cosy retreat with its electric fire comfortable seating TV DVD and Hi-Fi. The kitchen/diner is just next to the lounge and comfortably seats four at the dining table. You may like to bring home some of the local seafood and prepare it in the well-equipped kitchen which has an oven fridge with ice compartment dishwasher and microwave as well as radio. There is no washing machine in the property but guests can do laundry by arrangement with the owner. The property has two first-floor bedrooms: a double and a twin while the tiled bathroom has a shower over bath and WC. Outside the property benefits from garden areas with outdoor seating there is also a gas BBQ. Need to know: Sleeps 4. 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 twin. Bathroom with shower over bath and WC. Camel Trail: Padstow to Wadebridge

Five and a half level miles of dismantled railway along the Camel estuary, about two hours each way on a hard all-weather surface that stays walkable in the wettest week of the year. It starts beside the old station at the head of Padstow harbour; the harbourside pay-and-display car parks are the nearest and fill by mid-morning from Whitsun onwards, and Wadebridge has its own car park at the far end if you prefer to walk it inland to sea. There are no stiles, no livestock and no cliff edge, but this is a shared cycleway carrying fast bikes in both directions, so a short lead is the sensible default; the estuary itself is fenced off from the trail for most of the way.

Harbour Cove and Hawker’s Cove from Padstow

A three-mile loop out of Padstow along the estuary shore to two sandy coves and back over the fields, an easy hour and a half with one short pull up from the beach. It leaves from the harbour and the war memorial, so any of the Padstow car parks work; the walk is also the obvious use of a bad-weather day when the coast beyond Stepper Point is unwalkable. Only one stile, beside a gate, and no livestock as a rule; dogs may use Harbour Cove all year and there is a stream running onto the sand for a drink, but St George’s Cove is inside the council summer restriction and the coast path above it is unfenced.

A wide, shallow-shelving Atlantic bay that is the busiest learn-to-surf beach on this coast. It carries the longer award-beach restriction, so dogs are shut out from 10am to 6pm right through from mid-May to the end of September — before ten and after six the whole bay is yours. Daymer Bay, a mile south, has no ban at all.

Beach-shack bar and kitchen at the top of the Polzeath slipway, geared to wet wetsuits and sandy feet. Dogs are allowed in the bar at all times, which matters here because the beach itself shuts to them between 10am and 6pm from 15 May to 30 September. Good place to wait out the middle of a summer day.

Pentire Point and the Rumps from Polzeath

Four and a bit miles round the Pentire headland, a little over two hours with 150 metres of climbing, on short grass with two Iron Age promontory forts and the best view of the Camel estuary in it. Start either from Polzeath beach or from the National Trust car park at Pentireglaze, which has toilets and a cafe and is much the quieter of the two; Polzeath fills solid on a hot day. There are no stiles at all, so it suits a big dog, but the Trust grazes sheep and cattle over the headland and asks for leads, the path around Rumps Point is rocky and close to an unfenced edge, and Polzeath itself is restricted for four and a half months of the year.

Trevone to Padstow around Stepper Point

Seven and a half miles round the whole of the Stepper Point headland, about three and a quarter hours with 150 metres of climbing spread over a series of short sharp pulls between coves. Start at the Trevone Bay car park, which is small and beach-facing and gone by ten on a fine day; the alternative is to park in Padstow and pick the walk up halfway. A couple of slate stiles will need a hand for a small or elderly dog, there are free-range cattle on the clifftop near Butter Hole, and the path runs unfenced along the top of some genuinely serious drops between Gunver Head and Stepper.

Trevone Beach

A square of sand between low cliffs a couple of miles west of Padstow, with a blowhole in the field behind it. The council lists it under the long award-beach window, closed to dogs 10am to 6pm from mid-May to the end of September. Harlyn Bay, next along, is not on the council's list.

Rick Stein's village local a couple of miles inland from Padstow, all slate floors and St Austell ales, and named best dog-friendly pub in the UK by Canine Cottages. Dogs are welcome in the pub itself and in the beer garden, on a lead throughout. Handy after the Trevose Head loop.

Port Quin to Port Isaac on the rollercoaster path

Five miles between two fishing coves on the stretch of coast path locals call the rollercoaster, two and a half hours and 170 metres of ascent taken in a dozen short brutal pulls rather than one long climb. It starts at the tiny National Trust car park at Port Quin, which holds perhaps twenty cars and is gone early, and returns inland by field paths; Port Isaac has the pubs and the pasties at the halfway point. Five stone stiles on the inland leg will need a hand for most dogs and one wooden one needs lifting all but the smallest, both harbour beaches allow dogs all year, and the cliff path is unfenced throughout with seals in the coves below.

Port Isaac and Port Gaverne

A short, steep three and a third miles taking in both harbours and the cliffs either side, about two hours with 190 metres of climbing crammed into a small space. Park in the big car park at the top of the village, because the harbour itself is unsuitable for cars and the hill back up is punishing; the walk drops through the old fish cellars on the way out. Both beaches allow dogs all year and there are streams at Port Gaverne, but a large dog will need lifting over a couple of stiles in the fields above the cove, and the coast path at Lobber Point and Varley Head runs right along the unfenced edge.
